 DURATION : 15 Class Meetings

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of mean and median class 9th Ungrouped data.
Knowledge of mean and median class 10th Grouped data.

TEACHING AIDS:

Green Board, Chalk,  Duster, Charts, smart board, projector, laptop etc.

METHODOLOGY:-   Lecture method  and Demonstration.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Measures of Dispersions like range,
  • Mean deviation about mean for grouped and ungrouped data,
  • Mean deviation about Median for grouped and ungrouped data,
  • Variance with direct method and short-cut method,
  • Standard Deviation.
  • Analysis of frequency distribution with equal means but different variances.
  • Coefficient of variance.
LEARNING  OUTCOMES:

After studying this lesson student should know

1. Grouped and ungrouped data.

2. Method of finding mean and median of grouped and ungrouped data.

3. Method of finding the mean deviation about mean and about median.

4. Method of finding variance and standard deviation.

5. Method of comparing the data by using Coefficient of variance.

PROCEDURE AND EXPLANATION
Complete Explanation

Start the session by asking questions related to the mean, mode, median of grouped as well as ungrouped data. Now introduce the topic Statistics step by step as follows.

Introduction:

When given data is represented in graphically as well as tabular form then that data reveals certain salient features or characteristics.

Central Tendency

We also find some representative value of the given data like mean, mode, median.

These values are called central tendency.

A measure of central tendency gives us a rough idea where data points are centered.

Mean

Now teacher should explain,

Mean of ungrouped data: If  data is not divided into the class intervals then it is called the ungrouped data.

Mean of grouped data : If the data is divided into suitable groups then it is called the grouped data.

Cummulative Frequency

Teacher should help the students in finding:

Cumulative frequency , Median of ungrouped and ungrouped data.

Mean Deviation

Now introduce the topic, Mean Deviation about mean and Mean deviation about median for grouped and ungrouped data, also help the students in the implementation of these formulas in the different problems.

Variance and Standard Deviation

Now explain the topic variance with the help of direct method and shortcut method.

Also explain the method of finding the Standard Deviation from the variance.

Teacher should give the sufficient number of problems to the students so that properly understand the concept of variance and standard deviation.

Now explain the topic coefficient of variance and help the students in comparing the data with the help C.V.

STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:

 1. Review questions given by the teacher.

2. Students should prepare the presentation individually or in groups on the basic concepts and formulas based on the topic Statistics.

3. Solve NCERT problems with examples.

EXTENDED LEARNING:

Students can extend their learning in   through the Resource Centre Mathematics . Students can also find many interesting topics on mathematics at the site:  cbsemathematics.com

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:-

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic. Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.
Class Test , Oral Test , worksheet and Assignments. can be made the part of assessment.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.
