Board – CBSE

CLASS –XI

SUBJECT- MATHEMATICS

CHAPTER 3  :- Trigonometry

TOPIC:- Chapter 3 :- Trigonometry

DURATION:-

This chapter is divided into 8 modules and is completed in 20 class meetings.

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:-

TEACHING AIDS:-

Green Board, Chalk,  Duster, Charts, smart board, projector, laptop etc.

METHODOLOGY:-   Lecture method

OBJECTIVES:-
  • Positive and negative angles
  • Measuring angles in radian and in degrees and conversion from one measure to another.
  • Definition of trigonometric functions with the help of unit circle.
  • Truth of the identity  sin2x + cos2x = 1, for all x.
  • Signs of trigonometric functions.
  • Domain and range of trigonometric functions and their graphs.
  • Compound  formulas, multiple formulas sub-multiple formulas, AB and CD formulas and other trigonometric identities.
  • Principle values and general solutions of trigonometric functions.
PROCEDURE :-

Start the session by asking the questions related to the trigonometry of 10th standard and discuss the Pythagoras theorem with the students.  Now introduce the topic trigonometry  step by step as follows.

 S. No.

  Topic

1

Introduction

Now teacher will explain some basic facts related to the trigonometry and then explain the positive and negative angles with figure. Teacher should explain that angle measured in the anticlockwise direction is called positive angle and angle measured in the clockwise direction is called negative angle.

2

Different Measures of angles

Now teacher will introduce the concept of measure of angle at different scales and explain the concept of radian and degree measure in detail. Teacher should also explain the  Method of converting radian into degree and degree into radian and their simple applications.

To convert radian measure into degree measure students should multiple  the radian measure by

3

Transformations

Now teacher will explain the transformation of trigonometric functions in all the four quadrants with complete explanations and their applications in the problems.

  • In first quadrant all trigonometric functions are positive.
  • In second quadrant sine and cosecant are positive and all others are negative.
  • In third quadrant tangent and cotangent are positive and all others are negative.
  • In fourth quadrant cosine and secant are positive and all others are negative.

4

Domain and Range

Now teacher should introduce the concept of domain and range of trigonometric functions with their graphs. Here teacher should explain the graphs of different trigonometric functions. Teacher may assign some questions for practice.

5

Compound angle

Now teacher will explain the trigonometric formulas with compound angle like sin(x ± y), cos(x ± y), tan(x ± y), cot(x ± y). Teacher should also explain the application of these formulas in different problems.

6

Multiple angle

Now teacher should provide the explanation of multiple angles like sin2x, cos2x, tan2x, sin3x, cos3x, tan3x along with sub-multiple formulas.

7

Special Identities

Now teacher should explain the following  identities to the students and explain their applications to the students. Teacher may provide some problems to the students for practice.

8

Principle values and general solution

Now teacher will explain the Principle values and general solution of trigonometric equations. Teacher may also assign some problems to the students for practice.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:-

After studying this lesson students should know
  • all formulas, identities and basic concepts of trigonometry.
  • the method of converting radian into degree and degree into radian.
  • Applicability of all formulas and identities in solving the problems.
  • the AB and CD formulas and their applications.
STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:-
  • Review questions given by the teacher.
  • Students should prepare the presentation individually or in groups on the formulas and trigonometric identities of trigonometric functions
  • Solve NCERT problems with examples.
EXTENDED LEARNING:-

Students can extend their learning in   through the Resource Centre Mathematics . Students can also find many interesting topics on mathematics at the site:   cbsemathematics.com

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:-

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic. Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.
Class Test , Oral Test , worksheet and Assignments. can be made the part of assessment.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.
