Cartesian coordinate system, horizontal line, vertical line, origin, abscissa, ordinate, coordinate plane, quadrant.

CONTENT OF THE TOPIC
  • Cartesian coordinate system.
  • Different types of quadrant.
  • Points in the cartesian plane.
  • Coordinates of a point.
  • Representation of coordinates in the cartesian plane.
PROCEDURE :

Teacher will ask the class about the meaning of word ‘geometry’. After getting the different answers from the class, Teacher himself explains its meaning and reason for its origination  step by step as follows.

INTRODUCTION

To locate a point in the plane we use a system of two lines which are perpendicular to each other.

This system was first developed by a French Mathematician of the seventeenth century ‘ Rene Descartes’ .

In honor of Descartes this system is known as the Cartesian coordinate system.

Cartesian coordinate system

In this system there are two lines which intersect each other at a point perpendicularly.

Point of intersection of two lines is called Origin.

Horizontal line is called x-axis and Vertical line is called y-axis.

Numbers are written on both the axis on either side of the origin.

On x-axis positive numbers are written on the right side of the origin and negative numbers are written on the left side of the origin.

On y-axis positive numbers are written above the origin and negative numbers are written below the origin.

Quadrant

Two lines divide the plane into four parts called quadrant, quadrant I, II, III, IV,

In first quadrant both coordinate axis  are positive i.e. (+,+)

In second quadrant  x-axis is negative and y-axis is positive i.e. (-, +)

In third quadrant  x-axis is negative and y-axis is negative i.e. (-, -)

In fourth quadrant  x-axis is positive and y-axis is negative i.e. (+, -)

Points in the Cartesian plane

In this plane there are two lines one is along the x-axis and second is along the y-axis.

So this plane is called xy - plane or coordinate plane or Cartesian coordinate plane.

Abscissa: Points on the horizontal line (x-axis) are called abscissa.

Ordinate : Points on the vertical line (y-axis) are called ordinate.

COORDINATES OF A POINT:

Coordinates of any point in the Cartesian plane can be written as (x, y) or (a, b).

First coordinate is the value on the x-axis (or abscissa) and  second is the value on the y-axis (or ordinate).

Coordinates of the origin is always (0, 0)

Coordinates of any point on the x-axis is of the form (x, 0) or (a, 0)

Coordinates of any point on the y-axis is of the form (0, y) or (0, b)

Representation of coordinates in the cartesian plane

Lesson Plan

Coordinates of point A(3,4) and is lie in I quadrant.

Coordinates of point B(-4, 3)) and is lie in II quadrant.

Coordinates of point C(-2,-3) and is lie in III quadrant.

Coordinates of point D(3,-2) and is lie in IV quadrant.

Coordinates of point E(2,0) and is lie on x-axis.

Coordinates of point F(-2,0) and is lie on x-axis.

Coordinates of point G(0,2) and is lie on y-axis.

Coordinates of point H(0,-2) and is lie on y-axis.

STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:

Review questions assigned by the teacher.
Solve NCERT problems with examples and some extra questions from the refreshers.
Students can prepare a presentation on all the terms associated with the coordinate geometry along with their explanation.

EXTENDED LEARNING:

Students can extend their learning by studying basic concepts and formulas of mathematics through the Resource Centre Mathematics and can find interesting topics on mathematics at the site  https://www.cbsemathematics.com/

DIFFERENTIAL LEARNING

For Below Average Students
  • Mind/ Concept maps
  • Charts , Models and activity
  • Simple questions
For Average Students
  • Learning situations through watching video, creating collage, completing puzzles, assignment (click here)
For Above Average Students:
  • Group Discussion
  • Higher Order Thinking  Skill questions
SKILLS ENHANCED
Observation  skill,  analytical skill,  critical thinking, team work, constructive approach, interpersonal skill,  engagement  in learning process etc.
ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:-

At the end of the lesson a Class Test will be taken.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.
Worksheets and assignments should be given to the students.
Arrangement should be made for the oral test or quiz competitions.

Draw the graph as shown in the figure and label all points shown in the graph.
Also write in which quadrant or on which axis these points lie.
