NAME OF THE TEACHER

DINESH KUMAR

CLASS

IX

CHAPTER

10

SUBJECT

MATHEMATICS

TOPIC

CIRCLE

 DURATION : 13 Class Meetings

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of Plane Figures and basic Geometrical Concepts
TEACHING AIDS:

Green Board, Chalk,  Duster, Charts, smart board, projector and laptop  etc.

METHODOLOGY:

Demonstration and Lecture method

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Through examples, arrive at definition of circle and related concepts-radius, circumference, diameter, chord, arc, secant, sector, segment, subtended angle.

1. (Prove) Equal chords of a circle subtend equal angles at the center and (motivate) its converse.

2. (Motivate) The perpendicular from the center of a circle to a chord bisects the chord and conversely, the line drawn through the center of a circle to bisect a chord is perpendicular to the chord.

3. (Motivate) There is one and only one circle passing through three given non-collinear points.

4. (Motivate) Equal chords of a circle (or of congruent circles) are equidistant from the center (or their respective centers) and conversely.

5. (Prove) The angle subtended by an arc at the center is double the angle subtended by it at any point on the remaining part of the circle.

6. (Motivate) Angles in the same segment of a circle are equal.

 7. (Motivate) If a line segment joining two points subtends equal angle at two other points lying on the same side of the line containing the segment, the four points lie on a circle.

8. (Motivate) The sum of either of the pair of the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral is 180° and its converse.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After studying this lesson students should
  • Able  to understand the definition of  centre, radius, diameter, chord, sector and segment of the circle.
  • Understand the  theorems and their applications in different problems.
  • Understand the cyclic quadratic, their properties and their applications in different problems.
  • Able to solve day to day life problems by using these mathematical concepts

KEY WORDS :
Circle, Radius, Diameter, Chord, Arc, Semi-circle, Quadrant, Segment, Sector, Cyclic Quadrilateral etc.

PROCEDURE OF THE LESSON PLAN

Teacher will ask the class about the meaning of word ‘Lines and angles’ and different types of angles. After getting the different answers from the class, Teacher himself explains these meanings , definition and explanations step by step as follows.

Introduction:

Collection of all points in a plane which are at a fixed distance from the fixed point is called circle. The fixed point is called centre of the circle and the fixed distance is called the radius of the circle. Circle is a plane figure.

Teacher will explain the terms like radius, diameter, chord, segment, and sectors in the class with the help of ANIMATION given in the smart board content.

With the help of compasses and ruler teacher will explain the concept that there will be only one circle which passes through three non-collinear points. Teacher also explain the construction to find the centre of the circle.

Now theorems will be proved in the class with the help of suitable examples.

For example:

Equal chords subtend equal angles at the centre of the circle.
Angle at the centre is double the angle at the circumference.
Opposite angles of cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary.
Angles in the same segment are equal.
Equal chords are equidistant from the centre will be illustrated and proved in the class with the help of activities and examples.

Teacher will take some examples from NCERT book and explain the applications of the theorems used in the chapter.

Teacher will draw few figures on the board and will ask students to identify the sector and segment.

Using smart board content various terms and definitions related to circles will be explained.

STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:
  • Review questions assigned by the teacher.
  • Solve N.C.E.R.T problems with examples
  • Revise the theorems along with their applications in different problems.
EXTENDED LEARNING:

Students can extend their learning by studying basic concepts and formulas of mathematics through the Resource Centre Mathematics and can find interesting topics on mathematics at the site  https://www.cbsemathematics.com/

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES :

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic
Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.

Class Test and Oral Test, and worksheet and assignments can be made the part of assessment.
