TOPIC

HERON'S FORMULA

 DURATION : 4 Class Meetings

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:-

Knowledge of different types of triangles and their perimeter and area.

TEACHING AIDS:-

Green Board, Chalk,  Duster, Charts, smart board, projector and laptop  etc.

METHODOLOGY:-

Demonstration and Lecture method

OBJECTIVES:-
  • Different types of triangles.
  • Different formulas related with area and perimeter of triangles
  • Area of a triangle using Heron's formula (without proof).
  • Application of Heron's Formula in finding the area of a quadrilateral.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:-

After studying this lesson students will be able  to understand

  • Different types of triangles
    • Method of finding perimeter of different types of triangles.
    • Method of finding the area of different triangles by using different methods.
    • Students should know the Heron's formula and its application in finding the area of triangle and quadrilateral when altitudes are not given.

    PROCEDURE :

Teacher will ask the class about the meaning of word ‘Lines and angles’ and different types of angles. After getting the different answers from the class, Teacher himself explains these meanings , definition and explanations step by step as follows.

     Introduction:

The topic Heron's formula will be introduced in class by taking an example of a triangular board in which dimensions of sides are given but height is not given.

Revision of the following topics will be done:

Area of a triangle By using different formulas.

Teachers will illustrate that in our daily life, we come across many situations which involve the use of Heron's Formula such as to find an area of triangular field in which height is not given.

     Motivation

By drawing a triangle on board with its dimensions in which height is not given, the teacher will explain heron's formula and its usage in finding the area ofany triangle with given sides.

Students will be able to apply these concepts in finding the area of more complex problems related to real life situations.

     Introduction of Heron's Formula

Firstly the teacher will give an explanation about the notation. Then the teacher will explain semi-perimeter.

After explaining these terms, the teacher will describe the whole Heron's formula to find the area of the triangle.

    Applications of Heron's Formula

After describing the formula, the teacher will explain how to find the area ofquadrilaterals, by splitting it into two triangles and using Heron's formula, taking help of smart board animation.

Teacher will solve related questions on board, its calculation part will be performed by the students, by sitting in groups. Students will work in pairs.

    STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:-

After completing the topic/chapter students should
    • Review questions assigned by the teacher.
    • Solve N.C.E.R.T problems with examples.
    • Students can also prepare a ppt showing different types of triangles and method of finding their areas.
    EXTENDED LEARNING:-

Students can extend their learning by studying basic concepts and formulas of mathematics through the Resource Centre Mathematics and can find interesting topics on mathematics at the site  https://www.cbsemathematics.com/

    ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES :

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic. Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.

Class Test and Oral Test, and worksheet and assignments can be made the part of assessment.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.
