PROCEDURE & EXPLANATION

Teacher will ask the class about the different types of solid figures their shapes, vertices, edges and number of faces. After getting the different answers from the class, Teacher himself explains these terms by giving simple examples step by step as follows.

Introduction:

Teacher will give the first hand experience of the solid figures either by taking the students in the mathematics laboratory or by bringing the solids in the class.

The curved and total surface visible in the solid will be shown to the students and then the method to find the surface area and volume will be explained by writing the suitable formula on the board.

Motivation

Teacher will show few solids like water bottle, pen, pencil, lunch boxes etc. and will ask students about their shapes and combination of solids like cylinder, cone, cube, cuboid, sphere and hemisphere.

Brief Explanation of the solid figures

Now teacher will explain the vertices, faces, edges, surface and volumes of different solid figures like cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere and hemi - sphere.

Introduction of formulas of surface area and volumes

Now teacher will write formulas of Curved surface area, Total surface area and volume on the board or demonstrate these by using chart or with the help of any other media.

Teacher will also explain the derivations and internal links between all these formulas

Applications of formulas of surface area and volumes

Now teacher will explain the applications of all the formulas in different problems one by one.

Problems based on the curved surface area, total surface area and volume of cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere, hemi-sphere.

Teacher will also explain the applicability of these formulas in different combinations of solid figures.

STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:-

Review questions assigned by the teacher.
  • Solve N.C.E.R.T problems with examples.
  • Students can also prepare a Power Point Presentation showing different types of solid figures with their curved surface area, total surface area and volume.
  • Students can solve the assignment on surface area and volume.
EXTENDED LEARNING:-

Students can extend their learning by studying basic concepts and formulas of mathematics through the Resource Centre Mathematics and can find interesting topics on mathematics at the site  https://www.cbsemathematics.com/

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES :-

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic. Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.

Class Test, Oral Test, worksheet and Assignments can be made the part of assessment.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.

FEEDBACK:
All those students who performed well will be appreciated positively, and all those who can not perform up to the mark will again be given some important tips, guidance and  positive motivation to go through the topic again and then re-evaluated again. If possible then provision of remedial classes can be made for batter results.
