Clinometer Mathematics Project & Model

  CLINOMETER
Mathematics Project Work

Working model on Clinometer, Mathematics Project Clinometer, Mathematics Model for measuring the angle of elevation, angle of depression and slope of the objects.

Clinometer

An inclinometer or clinometer is an instrument used for measuring angle of elevation,  angle of depression and slope of the object. It is also called an inclinometer.

Special Protractor For Clinometer

Apparatus

  • Wooden Base 30 cm x 20 cm covered with Aluminium edge,

  • Aluminium Stand with holes at different heights up to 90 cm,

  • A sample tower made up of an Aluminium, fitted with a simple plyboard of about 120 cm.

  • Meter scale and permanent markers,

  • Thread, small weight, laser light, nuts and bolts, Pillar, Screw driver, drilling machine etc.

Base of Clinometer

Construction of Clinometer

  • First of all we take a wooden base of size 30cm X 20cm and with the help of a drilling machine we arrange a stand and tower at 52 cm distance from each other.

  • Now we make holes on the stand at different heights up to 90 cm.

  • Now we cut a plyboard in the shape of a semicircle (Protractor) and mark its two halves ( two quadrants) with the help of a marker.

  • At the middle point we mark zero point.

  • Starting from zero point mark divisions from 1o to 90o in both the quadrants.

  • Now fit the protractor on the stand along with the ruler and make the arrangements as shown in the figure.

  • Laser light is used to find the exact location of the target so that we can find the exact angle of elevation.

  • Laser Light is fixed with the help of a double tap at the top middle of the protractor and is used for finding the angle of elevation or angle of depression of the objective (top of the building, tower, hill etc.)

Working of Clinometer

  • Tilt the protractor so that the tip of the laser light reaches the target or destination.

  • Now at the ruder point find the angle of elevation or angle of depression let it be θ.

  • With the help of a meter scale find the distance between the stand of the clinometer and the tower or objective let it be ‘d’.

  • Now measure the height of the clinometer, let it is = P

  • Find the height h by using formula  h = d tan θ

  • Now find the height of the objective ‘H’ by using the formula

  • H = d tanθ + P   or  H = h + P

Protractor Scale for Clinometer

Calculations

In △ ABC,   = tanθ   ⇒  = tanθ   h = dtanθ

Total height of the Tower (H) = P + h

                 = P + dtanθ

                                                 = 90 + 52 X tanθ

Measurement of angle of Elevation

APPLICATIONS OF CLINOMETER

A clinometer can be used to measure heights of trees, poles, towers, buildings, to measure slopes of the objects,  Angle of elevations, angles of depression and the distance between two ships etc.
