SUBJECT- MATHEMATICS

CHAPTER 1 : SET THEORY

TOPIC:- Chapter  1 : Set Theory

DURATION:-

This chapter is divided into 10 modules and is completed in 20 class meetings.

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:-

Simple concept of algebra, addition , subtraction of different concepts.

TEACHING AIDS:-

Green Board, Chalk,  Duster, Charts, smart board, projector, laptop etc.

METHODOLOGY:-   Lecture method  and Demonstration

OBJECTIVES:-
  • Sets and their representation.
  • Definitions of different sets like, empty, finite, infinite, equal sets etc.
  • Subsets of a set of real numbers especially intervals (with notations).
  • Power set, universal set and venn diagrams.
  • Union and intersection of sets.
  • Difference of sets and complements of sets.
  • Properties of union, intersection and complementary sets.
PROCEDURE :-

Start the session by giving examples of different objects from the universe. Then tell the students that these objects can be classified into different categories. These categories are called the sets. Now introduce the concept of sets step by step as follows.

 Topic
[For complete explanation click here]

1

Start the session by giving examples of different objects from the environment like different animals, different cricketers, different books etc. and divide all the objects into different sets.

2

Explain how sets can be written in two different ways ie in Roster form and in Set-builder form.

3

Now give definitions of different sets with examples like empty set, finite set, infinite set, equal sets, equivalent sets, universal sets.

4

Definition of subsets, proper and improper subsets, subsets of set of real numbers, power sets and universal   sets.

5

Different types of intervals with their representations on the number line.

6

Union of sets, properties of union of sets with their venn diagrams.

7

Intersection of sets, properties of intersection of sets with their venn diagrams.

8

Difference of two sets, explanation with venn diagrams

9

Complementary of a set with their properties, De-Morgan’s law.

10

Practical problems on union and intersection of sets and use of the formula:  n(A U B) = n(A) + n(B) – n(A∩B)

n(A U B U C) = n(A) + n(B) + n(C) –n(A∩B) – n(B∩C) – n(C∩A) + n(A∩B∩C)

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:-

After studying this lesson student should know  the different types of sets, their union, their intersection, their complements, difference of two sets, properties of union, intersection, and complementary sets with De-Morgan’s law. Students should know the applications of these properties in different problems.

STUDENTS DELIVERABLES:-

Review questions given by the teacher.  Solve NCERT problems with examples and some extra questions from refreshers.

EXTENDED LEARNING:-

Students can extend their learning in   through the Resource Centre Mathematics . Students can also find many interesting topics on mathematics at the site:   cbsemathematics.com

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:-

Assignment sheet will be given as home work at the end of the topic. Separate sheets which will include questions of logical thinking and Higher order thinking skills will be given to the above average students.
Class Test , Oral Test , worksheet and Assignments. can be made the part of assessment.
Re-test(s) will be conducted on the basis of the performance of the students in the test.
